中央元音（mid central vowel (schwa)）是一个元音，常出现于口语。国际音标里以⟨ə⟩表示，相当于X-SAMPA音标的⟨@⟩。此音的国际音标符号是倒转了的小写拉丁字母e。圆唇中央元音和不圆唇中央元音都是以此符号表示。

中央不圆唇元音

中央不圆唇元音时常以/ə/来表示。不过，/ə/这个符号不是明确地代表不圆唇元音，而且经常被用以表示任意的非重音“暗”母音。如果要表达得更精确，半闭央不圆唇元音的符号可能会被与开音符号合用而变成/ɘ̞/。

一个语言可能会有和半闭与半开的央元音不同的中央圆唇元音 (a rounded /ə/不过因为没有已知的语言分辨半闭、中与半开的央元音，因此IPA没有这个单独给母音的符号，而代表半闭央圆唇元音的符号/ɵ/经常被用以表示这个元音。如果要表达的更精确，半闭央圆唇元音的符号可能会被与开音符号合用而变成：/ɵ̞/.
